TikTok video specs

What TikTok’s newsroom, developer docs, and ads help pages confirm about video length, formats, and size — with a clear line between organic posts and ads.

Last verified against the official pages listed below.

Max length — in-app upload
Not publishedTikTok’s help center pages that state the in-app limit could not be loaded for verification, and we found no other current official page with the number. Check the limit shown in your own app.
Max length — Posting API
3 minutes for all creators; 5 or 10 minutes for some[1]Applies to third-party apps posting through TikTok’s Content Posting API (the per-account limit is returned as max_video_post_duration_sec), not necessarily to the TikTok app itself.
Aspect ratio
9:16 recommended (ads)[2]TikTok’s in-feed ad spec recommends vertical 9:16 at 540×960 or larger. No separate organic recommendation is published.
Recommended resolution
Not published[1]The posting API accepts 360 to 4096 pixels per side. 1080×1920 is common practice, not an official requirement.
File format
MP4 (recommended), MOV, WebM[1]Via the posting API, with H.264, H.265, VP8, or VP9 video and 23–60 fps.
Maximum file size
4 GB via the posting API; 500 MB for in-feed ads[1][2]TikTok’s help center does not load for verification, so we do not list an in-app organic limit.
UI safe zone
Ads: downloadable templates, no pixel values[2]TikTok says the ad safe zone depends on orientation, caption length, and extra ad formats.

Safe zone on TikTok

TikTok’s interface covers the bottom of the frame with the username, caption, and sound label, and the right edge with the profile, like, comment, bookmark, and share buttons. The caption area grows when you write a long description, so the bottom zone is not fixed.

TikTok publishes safe-zone templates for ads but no organic pixel values. Our 1080×1920 overlay marks an approximate area compiled from public measurements; treat it as a planning guide and confirm on a phone.

  • TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program only rewards videos longer than one minute, with at least 1,000 qualified views.
  • Qualified views exclude views under five seconds, paid views, and fraud.
  • Eligibility: 18 or older, 10,000 followers, and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, in the countries where the program is open.
