Safe zone on Instagram Reels

Meta is the only one of the three platforms that publishes safe-zone numbers, and they are for Reels ads: leave at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% on each side free of text, logos, and key visuals.

Organic Reels show less interface than an ad, but the same bottom caption area and right-hand buttons. Using the ad guidance for organic posts is a conservative default.

What changed recently

  • Instagram’s help page now says Reels can be recorded and edited up to 20 minutes, while the page’s own summary still mentions 3 minutes — the 3-minute mark is where recommendation to non-followers stops.
