Thumbnail

A thumbnail is the still image that represents a video before it plays — in search results, suggested videos, the channel page, and playlists. Together with the title it makes the click decision. Effective thumbnails are readable at the size of a fingernail: one subject, strong contrast, a face or object that shows the topic, and little or no text that repeats the title. For YouTube Shorts, you can pick a frame from the video as the cover in the YouTube mobile app; the frame appears on the Shorts shelf, the channel’s Shorts tab, and search. On TikTok, the cover frame appears on your profile grid, which is where returning viewers decide what to watch next.

In a HypeNest pass

HypeNest generates thumbnail options next to each clip and title, so you approve the package in one pass. Review thumbnails at small size and reject anything that misrepresents the clip.

FAQ

Do YouTube Shorts need a thumbnail?
The feed autoplays, but Shorts still show a cover frame on the channel page, search, and shelves. Picking a clear frame is worth the minute it takes.
What size should a thumbnail be?
For long-form YouTube, 1280×720 (16:9) is the standard recommendation. Shorts covers are chosen from the vertical video itself.
