Click-through rate (CTR)
Click-through rate is the share of impressions that turned into a view: clicks divided by the number of times the thumbnail or post was shown. On YouTube, impressions CTR measures how often people clicked your thumbnail after seeing it on YouTube surfaces such as Home, search, and suggested videos. It is the packaging metric: title and thumbnail drive it; the video itself does not. On Shorts and TikTok the main feed plays the next video automatically, so there is no click to measure there — CTR matters for Shorts mostly on search, the channel page, and other browse surfaces. A rising CTR with falling retention usually means the packaging promised something the video did not deliver.
In a HypeNest pass
HypeNest drafts titles and thumbnails next to each clip so packaging is reviewed together with the cut. Judge a title by whether the clip keeps its promise, not only by whether it would get the click.
FAQ
- Do Shorts have a click-through rate?
- In the swipe feed, no — the next Short plays without a click. CTR still applies where Shorts appear as thumbnails, such as search results and the channel page.
- What is a good CTR on YouTube?
- It depends on the traffic source and channel size. YouTube’s Help Center says half of all channels and videos have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%; compare against your own history.
